About
I've created these pieces using the waste spitted from the sea on the small beach in front of my house on the Island Iž in Dalmatia, Croatia.
Cleaning the beach and the sea bottom where my kids swim I've asked myself who throws all that garbage and when. I was playing with and observing it between my fingers. Hardly washed and tumbled numerous times, burned under the sun for days, months, and years it is perfectly clean material but still garbage. Origin shapes and colors changed. Assembled, they got a new look now and begin to live a new life. Why ships and boats? It is man's first connection with the sea. Only by a boat, a man is able to explore, feel and know the sea. Pieces were not particularly designed or treated in any way. I only use nails, wire, strings, and cords. No glue. I've named them in an old-fashioned way. Names are descriptive adjectives for a special shape, purpose, color, or manner which are very common in Dalmatia. At the same time, it is a homage to the traditional boat makers worldwide. Unfortunately, this is still about garbage, waste, and pollution. Exhibition "Boats and pictures", Old Olive Mill, Knež, Mali Iž, 2019
